What Is Houttuynia Cordata Extract?

The product is a natural botanical substance obtained from the entire herb of Houttuynia cordata (also known as chameleon plant). It is a brown-yellow powder containing several bioactive chemicals such as flavonoids (quercitrin, hyperoside, rutin, quercetin), polysaccharides, volatile oils, alkaloids, and phenolic acids.

The extract was standardised to the total flavonoid content as the major quality measure. Our commercial powder has no volatile decanoyl acetaldehyde, which is predominant in fresh plant material. Instead it contains heat-stable flavonoids for 24-month shelf stability and constant performance.

FAQ 

Q: What do you do about the usual 'fishy' smell in the product Powder?

A: We use vacuum low temperature concentration and spray drying methods. A slight distinctive odour is a hallmark of genuineness and the disagreeable volatile note (decanoyl acetaldehyde) is much decreased relative to fresh juice and blends nicely into recipes.

Q: Is the powder water soluble or oil soluble?

A: Most standard ratio extracts (10:1) are water-soluble and include a significant amount of polysaccharides. For the complete solubility of high-purity standardised forms of flavonoids (e.g. Quercetin enhanced) in cosmetic formulations, the use of ethanol or propylene glycol may be required.

Q: How much should I take of dietary supplements?

A: From clinical data, the equivalent of 3-6g of raw herb daily. For a 10:1 extract powder, this is around 300mg-600mg per day.

Q: Does the extraction process destroy the heat-sensitive Houttuynin?

A: Houttuynin is chemically unstable. In commercial product powder, the efficacy is often benchmarked against Flavonoids (Quercitrin) which are heat-stable, rather than Houttuynin, to ensure long-term shelf stability (24-36 months).

Q: How do you prevent caking in the powder?

A: The product is naturally hygroscopic. We control moisture content <5.0% during production and use double-layer PE bags inside fiber drums with desiccants. We recommend manufacturing environments maintain relative humidity below 45% during handling.
